Director of Oncology Disease Biology

Immunocore, a pioneering, clinical-stage T cell receptor biotechnology company is seeking to enhance its scientific leadership team with an experienced and innovative cancer researcher to lead Oncology Disease Biology.  Reporting to the Head of Research, the Director of Oncology Disease Biology will be responsible for developing a forward-looking strategy for oncology at Immunocore, with a focus on the evolution of the oncology pipeline. The successful candidate will work closely with internal and external collaborators to enhance Immunocore’s capabilities in preclinical cancer research, implementing state of the art systems and technologies.  The Director of Oncology Disease Biology will interface with clinical development and translational medicine to close the loop from “bench to bed to bench” identifying and addressing unmet clinical need to further improve the outcome for patients with cancer. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of scientific leadership and moving therapeutic programs from concept stage to IND and into the clinic.

 Responsibilities in oncology research include:

  • Ownership of oncology research activities with responsibility for developing a forward-looking strategy for oncology research
  • Oversee oncology drug target selection utilizing the existing antigen discovery engine along with mechanism-based and big data approaches
  • Nominate drug development programs to the research portfolio in-line with the oncology research strategy
  • Work closely with internal and external experts to explore the biology of potential and selected targets
  • Develop and/or access innovative disease area models and systems to test Immunocore’s therapeutic approaches to cancer
  • Ensure scientific excellence in oncology research and provide direction and prioritization of research programs in oncology
  • Support oncology programs that progress beyond candidate drug nomination, acting as a disease area-specific interface with translational medicine and clinical development
  • Bring learnings from the clinic back to research thereby enabling refinement of the disease area strategy
  • Provide input into competitive & commercial analyses, creation of partnering & investor materials and any resulting due diligences processes.
  • Present to investors and the board of directors, as required

 Responsibilities across the research department

  • As a member of the research leadership team, help build a scientifically strong and business savvy research organization. Influence the direction of research enabling the advancement of the Company’s pipeline, process, and technological capabilities.  Help to build the next generation of research leadership.  Ensure appropriate communication and dissemination of information throughout research
  • Serve as a member of the research portfolio committee that oversees the entire research portfolio across therapeutic areas

 Management responsibilities

  • Provide scientific guidance and direction to staff, ensuring the timely delivery of department objectives
  • Provide direct line and matrix management of staff including
    • Conducting performance appraisals and development discussions
    • Providing regular feedback and mentoring
    • Supporting goal setting and guiding individuals toward the achievement of scientific and career objectives
  • Make sound hiring decisions in-line with the disease area strategy

 Requirements

  • PhD or equivalent in oncology or immunology as preference, or related discipline
  • Significant post-graduate experience in oncology research, preferably in industry, with a track record of achievement as evidenced by significant project advancement under his/her/their leadership, patents and/or publications
  • Experience leading complex research projects in oncology, identifying the most direct path to key decision points and making sound scientific judgements
  • Experience managing and mentoring teams of scientists in the achievement of project goals
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills across all levels in an organization, and with external collaborators
  • Direct-line and matrix management experience
