THE ROLE:

The Senior IT Linux Developer is responsible for the effective operation of the Linux environment within Immunocore, principally used by Scientists and Bioinformaticians in our exploratory science. They administer Linux systems and applications where segregation of duties is necessary, manage Linux based tools to help in the efficiency of IT/Bioinformatics, and help to develop and test Linux based applications as appropriate including to be used in Science. The role responsibility stretches across both onsite and cloud provisioned services.

The Senior IT Linux Developer will be the ‘go-to’ person for managing the delivery of all Linux support, integrations and projects, maintaining & improving the solutions for enhanced business use. This includes designing, implementing, monitoring & performance tuning, troubleshooting and issue resolution on Linux systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support Immunocore scientific users with on-site and cloud-based Linux computing platforms.
  • Maintain and enhance computing platforms using system administration skills.
  • Take on the support role for Linux related tasks. Manage the delivery against 3rd level support tickets as appropriate.
  • Manage procedures for installation and configuration of key scientific applications.
  • Provision data storage space for scientific data on cloud platforms.
  • Identify, implement and administrate Linux based tools to help in improving the effectiveness of the IT function and bioinformatics, such as Agile backlog management tools, scripting and event monitoring, automation of administrative tasks.
  •  Develop Linux based scientific applications or functions using modern programming tools from a backlog of identified requirements on standard platforms.
  • Administer scientific applications in line with service design documents and the Service Desk processes.
  • Work within an Agile and DevOps methodology, championing the same within the IT team, and identifying operational IT improvements achievable through the use of Linux tools.
  • Provide technical expertise in the area of Linux configuration, customization, support and technical management.
  • Perform regular administrator duties for the Linux environment.
  • Work collaboratively with business experts to help develop & define business requirements, translating these into applicable Linux (or other) capabilities and ensuring successful delivery of these.
  • Work with IT colleagues on technical task planning and effort estimation.
  • Help ensure Immunocore adheres to robust & efficient Change Management processes for the Linux environment, contributing to improving these where necessary.
  • Coach and mentor members of the team, in their development of Linux understanding and expertise.

Experience & Knowledge:

Essential

  • Experience and demonstrable ability with Linux servers & system administration.
  • Experience of application installation on Linux platforms such as Debian/Ubuntu or Red Hat/Centos.
  • Ability to compile applications from source code if needed.
  • Knowledge of Linux applications as used in a technical or scientific environment.
  • Containerisation experience, preferably Docker.
  • Good IAC and Configuration Management skills, preferably Terraform and Ansible.
  • Monitoring AWS or similar environments, identifying & implementing agreed improvements.
  • Knowledge of one or more programming languages such as Python, R, BASH, etc.
  • Working with GIT and other DevOps tools.
  • Knowledge of application development in a Linux environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member, in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment managing numerous deadlines whilst successfully communicating with customers/management.

Desirable

  • Experience working in Life Sciences or a Pharmaceutical company and the necessary regulations on application development such as GAMP 5
  • Experience of networking components, for example subnetting, load balancing, routing, network protocols, ACLs, firewalls, etc.
  • Experience of cloud-based computing platforms.
  • Experience with developing & executing database queries using SQL.
  • Some experience of sequence analysis or bioinformatics.
  • Some exposure to a range of software development tools and methodologies.
  • CI/CD knowledge.
  • Some knowledge of web technology such as development.

Education & Qualifications:

Essential

  • Degree in computer science/sciences/similar field, or relevant computing experience in a technical environment.

Desirable

  • Linux Professional Institute Certification
  • Python Certified Associate Professional
  • AWS Certification

Other:

  • In line with the business requirements and SLAs put in place, or during unplanned events, the role holder may be required to work irregular hours or out of hours on occasion.
  • The role may be required to travel locally, nationally and occasionally internationally on an irregular basis.
