As part of the Infectious Diseases team, you will have the opportunity to contribute towards cross functional efforts focussed on applying Immunocore’s ImmTAX® platform for the development of novel treatments for chronic infections, including HIV and HBV (Yang et al Mol Ther. 2016 Nov; 24(11): 1913–1925; Fergusson et al Hepatology . 2020 Nov;72(5):1528-1540). The team is involved in multiple stages of the drug discovery and development process, from target discovery all the way to clinical.

The Role:

To design and conduct experimental investigations, in association with the team and with appropriate guidance from colleagues and managers, enabling the advancement of the Company pipeline, process, or technology capabilities.


  • Execute experiments to address key scientific questions enabling project progression, utilizing range of techniques including flow cytometry, ELISpots, ELISAs, qPCR. Work will require handling human viruses. Some work will be conducted in a Containment Level 3 (CL3) facility.
  • Make detailed observations, analyse data and interpret results. Demonstrate scientific rigor in assessing data.
  • Maintain accurate records of all work, completing laboratory notebooks on time and following company procedures.
  • Continually strive to increase knowledge in relevant fields including HIV/HBV functional cure, through review of the scientific literature, discussion with IMC scientists and attending relevant seminars
  • Effectively present results at internal meetings.
  • Understand priorities and scheduled objectives, alerting managers to any perceived risks or delays.
  • Work effectively in a matrixed team structure under general direction. Work will be reviewed against objectives for accuracy, completeness and sound judgement.
  • Compliance with the Company’s Health and Safety policies, especially within the CL3 laboratory environment, through following risk assessments, maintaining CL3 competency and training records, attending CL3 users’ meetings
  • Compliance with Human Tissue Authority requirements


  • PhD in molecular biology, cell biology, virology, immunology, or related discipline.
  • Alternatively, a B.S. or M.S. with significant work experience in relevant scientific areas and a record of scientific accomplishment (e.g., project progression, published manuscripts and/or abstracts).


  • Knowledge of Immunology and/or infectious diseases.
  • Worked in a bench-based laboratory environment with competence in key techniques relevant to the department including:
    • Culturing primary cells and cell lines.
    • Experience in flow cytometry and/or ELISAs, ELISpots and other 96-well format assays.
    • Molecular techniques including some of the following: PCR, Mutagenesis, qPCR, Droplet Digital PCR.
  • Competent in the safe use of general laboratory equipment.
  • Recorded results in a concise and timely way, and in compliance with agreed standards.
  • Learnt about new practices through observation, self-learning and an enquiring mind.
  • Worked and contributed effectively in a diverse team environment.
  • Presented results and scientific practices.
  • Able to meaningfully contribute on occasion to scientific team discussions, in particular with regards to the interpretation of their own data.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Scientific curiosity; interest in learning new things and taking on added responsibility.
