Embracing Feedback and Continuous Development at Immunocore
– Tina St. Leger, CHRO, Immunocore

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my years leading people and culture at Immunocore and many other companies, it’s this: feedback is the heartbeat of a thriving organization. It’s not just a tool for performance management—it’s the foundation for growth, trust, learning, and innovation. When we get feedback right, we unlock the potential of our teams and, ultimately, our business.

It's also one of the most challenging things to do well not just when you are a manager, but also when you want to give feedback to colleagues or your manager.

Why feedback matters

Let’s be honest: giving and receiving feedback isn’t always comfortable… especially when the feedback includes areas that need to be addressed. But the discomfort is a sign that we care—about our work, our colleagues, and our shared mission. At Immunocore, we’re tackling some of the world’s toughest health challenges. That means we need every one of us, at every level, to be learning and growing, every day.

Feedback helps us to do that. It’s how we celebrate our strengths, identify our blind spots, and course-correct before small issues become big ones. Gallup’s research shows that employees who receive regular, meaningful feedback are more engaged and motivated to do outstanding work. I see this every day: when feedback is part of our culture, people feel seen, valued, and empowered to make a difference. I also see – sometimes – when feedback has not been shared truthfully and constructively, the consequences it can have for a specific project, an individual, their team, or their manager.

Our mission demands that we bring our best selves to work every day. Feedback is how we can make sure we do just that. It’s not about criticism—it’s about care. It’s about believing in each other’s potential and having the courage to help each other grow.

Let’s make feedback a habit, not a hurdle.
Because when we do, we don’t just build better teams—we build a better us and a better future.
