Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls, or CMC, is a critical function in drug development. But it is sometimes misunderstood as a formality after the discovery of a potential new treatment.

When a molecule has shown promise in the research lab, the journey to a new medicine is only just beginning.

At the intersection of science and engineering

CMC plays an integral role in the full lifecycle of our medicines – from understanding a molecule in the laboratory to overseeing manufacture, confirming quality, and managing commercial distribution.

Having deep in-house CMC expertise means we can make fast, well-informed decisions about how our molecules are developed and manufactured. Our CMC group works in partnership with our Research, Clinical and Commercial teams, which means considerations such as manufacturing at scale and patient convenience can be built into a molecule's development from the start.

Our CMC and Supply Chain department is a multidisciplinary function comprising eight teams, each playing an essential role in developing, manufacturing and supplying our platform therapies.

Analytical Development

Designs and validates the analytical methods used to test and characterize our molecules.

Process Development

Designs and optimizes the manufacturing processes for our drug substance (the active ingredient in a medicine).

Formulation Development

Develops the final form of our medicines by combining the active substance with inactive excipients.

Quality Control Stability

Designs and monitors long-term stability studies to confirm that our medicines maintain their required quality throughout their approved shelf life.

Manufacturing and Outsourcing

Manages production at our external contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) partners.

Laboratory Operations

Ensures operational excellence through implementation of lab quality systems and processes to enable the generation of high-quality data.

Global Commercial Supply Chain, Distribution and Trade

Manages the end-to-end supply of commercial medicine from manufacture through to global distribution.

Commercial Supply Chain, Distribution and Trade

Manages commercial medicine distribution across the US, Europe and the rest of the world.
